you can get john guest type press fittings, dont use brass barbed fittings.

float valve, kent style, or solenoid are main options.

pro's and cons of float valve:
1) cheaper
2) not so reliable, wear over time, and snails can get lodged in the lever

pro's and cons of actuators:

1) electrical device, some might argue possible point of failure
2) cost

i suggest going with a double switch, solenoid unit. these are designed, fail to close (in case of power failure), and have two levels of safety built in. these are industrial type solenoids, easy duty for them in a top off situation.
The repeat ratings are into the 10's of thousands....you will be out of the hobby before it wears out.

you can diy one, try to find one used, or simply buy new.

i know this is the diy section, many of folks have built there own, but autotopoff offers a good product, in case you dont have the patience to hunt for components.

here is where i got mine. been happy with it, no issues. end of the day, you do a float, you will inevitably replace it a couple of times, so might as well bite the bullet and get the solenoid unit, more piece of mind, less chance of wet floors.
