i know that Kole tangs and Yellow tangs are great for keeping some algae in check. I was wondering if it is the same case with a Scopas tang, are they good foragers like some of the other tangs?

No fish will cure an algae problem. I would get to the source rather then try to mask it.

Is this in your 40? A tang in a 40g is not going to help algae at all. It will make it worse.

My scopas is a very poor grazer in comparison to bristletooth tangs. Something in the bristletooth family have always been a better choice in my tanks. I also have a large naso, who is a grazer, but a selective grazer.

Yeah he's right on my Yellow Scopas will chow down on any kind of algae.

Ditto on the tank being too small for a tang. If you have an algae issue now that's an excessive nutrient problem. Tangs are poop machines and that will only increase the issue. Also a 40 is not nearly enough room for that fish. Suggest you get a handle on your nitrate problem and that will solve your algae problem. Reduced tank feeding, proper lighting, regular water changes, and a little time. That will take care of your problem.

Best thing you can do for algae is to test your water for chemical inbalances, and if you haven't got a test kit, alot of LFS's test your water, or you can buy a kit. Usually the issue is in magnesium, ph, alkalinity, phosphates, and nitrates. I had a sea hare in my tank that trapped itself somewhere in the back and then melted. I had tons of algae the next morning and my scopas didn't touch it. But i added things like eight.four and did water changes. when you do a water change, try to use the hose to suck out clumps of algae because just killing the algae will release the organic chemicals back into the water.

If this is a FORTY GALLON do not put a friggin tang in there. Get a lawnmower blenny. There's a reason they're called that, and unlike the scopas, they can stay in your tank for their entire lifespan.

Here comes the blenny police!

Actually, lawnmower blennies sometimes won't accept prepared foods (I've seen a fair amount of these my years in the hobby) and will starve to death in all but large aquariums. Also, they can end up being terrible nippers of corals.

A small scopas will be fine in a 40 breeder as long as there are definite plans to upgrade down the road. Also, with local reef forums it's quite easy to find someone to take a free or cheap fish with the stipulation that the person have a nice big home. So, I say go for it if the fact that it will outgrow the tank fairly quickly is considered.

Damn this is an old thread...

Finally a realist!
