View Full Version : Clown fish ?
Can I mix and not match 2 clowns? I currently have 1 false percula in a 55 with no other fish. Thanks in advance for your help:thumbsup:

The safest approach would be to get a juvenile of the same species. Mixing species and/or mixing adults that aren't mated can lead to disaster in a tank that size.

I have 2 different types and its no prob, its good to find another non paired clown and get a different size either 1" smaller or bigger. in your case your clown is a female because she has been alone or atleast has the female dominance, so I would get a smaller tank bred clown thats in a tank with a handful of them. Hope this helps

It is usually a very bad idea to mix two different clownfish species in the same tank unless you have a large tank (probably 150 gallons or more). I definitely wouldn't attempt it in a 55g tank. The notable exception is false and true perculas. They'll generally get along fine if paired correctly. I'd highly recommend going into the Clownfish and Anemone forum. There's a sticky in there that talks about pairing clownfish. Fortunately ocellaris are some of the easier clowns to pair as they're relatively mild mannered.
As a side note, I don't think it's in any way definite that your clown is a female, though it's often a good idea to assume it's female if you're not sure and pair it with a smaller clownfish that you're pretty certain is either a juvenile or a male.

In general, people say it's a bad idea to get two different species and usually doesn't go well long term.

just wait and find a mate for your current perc. If you're going to have two clownfish in your tank you might as well have a mated pair. It'll be a much more interesting relationship to watch than to "similar looking" fish that have no interest in each other.
