I moved my leather coral over from my 50 to my new 90G. THe move over didnt go soo well and the coral doesnt look too good. Ive had it since i started in the hobby 5 years ago so i dont want to give up too soon. But when i touch it or try the straighten it back up it lets off a smoke like substance as seen in the pic. Im sure thats not good but its it because its stressed or dying?

It's definitely not happy that's for sure. Is the old tank still up or do you have a hospital/quarantine tank that it can be moved to? How long has the new tank been up? Did it cycle? Have the lights changed? What are water params in the new tank?

the 50 g was established. I moved all the rock and corals over to my 90. THe 90 is cycled with established rock. I did have to chisel the coral off another rock but there is still a piece of that rock attached to the coral. so i didnt have to cut the coral

Looks like it is deteriorating at the base. Its kinda fraying away.
Normally it stands straight up.
How do you know when a leather is dead?

It will stink to high heaven. It's not dead. Mine looks like that everytime its sheds its skin. Give it a few days.

either shedding skin, or not used to the light quite yet. if params check out, and your lights arent to big of a switch for it, i say just give it some time.

I wasnt very careful with it in the move. I had it out of water for a munite when i chiseled it of its original rock. The base of it was covered with green star polyps because i was overgrown. I did rip a small piece off the coral because it did look dead at the time. I prob. shouldnt have done that.
Doing tests now
ph - 8.17 Done by aquacontroller
dkh - 8.3
calcium - 400
amonia - undetectable
nitrates - undetectable
ran out of phosphate tests but my phosphate reactor is coming tomorrow.
What was that smoke that came off of it when i touched it before?

"Smoke" sounds like dead tissue clouding the water. It looks like it's shedding though. Mine looks like that right now as we speak. Zero worries. If the polyps dont come out after 4-5 days you may have a problem. If everything else it out and doing well I wouldn't sweat it and I definatly wouldn't be wasting costly test kits on a realitivly cheap softy.

Yea i hear ya. sentimental though since it was my first. Its the only softie im keeping in my new tank since im going SPS.
On a brighter note my shrimp came out that i added this weekend, thought he was a gonner after i hadnt seen him since i put him in.
Everything else looks good though. As long as there is no amonia i feel better.

Its fine, give it some time to adjust to the new changes. Leathers are tough corals!
