Recently purchased a 180 gallon tank. Starting to think about possible equipment. Wondering what skimmer would be best for my anticipated SPS dominant setup? Budget is from $400 - $500. I've read good things about the Octo Extreme line of skimmers. Had my eye on the 200 or 250 model. Any feedback or other suggestions appreciated. Thanks.

I'm in the process of trying to pick a skimmer for my 180 build as well.

The I-Techs look good.

I'm starting a 170 and have been looking at the octopus cone and the ATB 840 but am open to whatever works the best.

IMO there is no comparison between the ATB and the octo. The octo is a decent skimmer but not a premium skimmer.

Just posted this on another thread where the guy is looking for a 120 tank. should work for a 180 as well....

Vertex Internal250 $320
Eshopps S150 $390
Super Reef Octopus XP-2000 $400
SWC XTREME Mini S $350

If you bump your cost up to 650 you can pick from a ATB 840 or a Alpha 170.

There are many other skimmers out there as well. This was just a quick search on my part.

there is a guy in the for sale thred that has a AquaC EV240 for sale for $350 i love these skimmers and they pull all kinds of gunk out.
here is a link to his page.

then you need a mag 18 pump and this will pull everything out.

I loved my old EV120 but once again while it was a good skimmer, it doesn't compete with the newer skimmers.

1. By the time you buy the EV for 350 and then add a new pump your tanking $500 bucks for a skimmer that uses 145+ watts.

2. $500 bucks can get you a much nicer new skimmer that does the same job as the EV and uses 1/3 of the power consumption.

i have a swc 250a cone. before that i had a swc200. they both skimmed awesome. i opted for the cone, because i wanted to have the latest and greatest :wildone: . end of the day, they both produce lots of stinky brown stuff.

Thanks everyone for your input. I'm currently using a EV-120 on my 75gal. reef and it does a good job.....I think. Never had anything else to compare it to.

rbnice1, thanks for the little research. I might have to save a few more pennies and go for one of the premium skimmers. I just want a skimmer that's going to do the job well. Not just get by.

Keep em coming.
Thanks.

The beckets like the EV's and MRC are probably the best but use a lot of juice. I had 2 asm's on my 110 they are decent skimmers.

I don't know about these new skimmers. I hear a lot of people say that the new cones are the best.

I think the Octopus with ether siccie pumps (extreme series) or bubble master (Super reef series) pumps work excelent, but if you want a HE skimmer veretex Alpha will be my choise.

My two cents

I would look at the Hurricone Cat 1 or ATB 1050.
