View Full Version : Is a Vortech MP 20 enough flow for a 90

Just put an MP 20 in my new 90 gallon and was wondering if this was enough flow? My sump/ return is only pushing around 400gph. I have been in the hobby for 6+ years but flow has always been an issue for me. I had two 6045 tunze streams in my 125 and it hardly seemed like enough. I can always upgrade my 20 to a 40w but don't want to unless really needed as I hate the look of alot of power heads.

i would have went with an MP40W as they are adjustable and if you ever went bigger then you all ready have the pump. I am running 2 MP40W in my 240G and plan on adding one or two more later on when i can afford them. My return pumps are running at 2400GPH. I like alot of flow threw out my tank.

Wonder if I could sell my mp20 driver? That would help with the cost of the upgrade.

I have two mp40's and one mp20 running in my 90, I would go with at least two mp40's.

I have 2 MP40s in a 90 and I would say that the flow is adequate, but not crazy. I run them in reef crest pattern at full blast. I think a third would give me great flow, so, no, don't think a single MP20 would cut it.

You're probably going to need 2 MP40's, especially if you want to keep SPS.

I think one MP40W would be enough. My LFS had a 120 gal for a couple of years with one MP40 and the flow looked great, lots of movement.

I am putting one MP40 on my 120 setup, but my return turnover is about 1000 gph in addition to the Vortech.

I would try one MP40 first, you can always add another. I would think you could find a buyer for your controller if you can find someone that had water damage on theirs.

I was thinking the same

I have two 40s in my 77 and that's just about right with them running at 75%, master/slave anti-synch, long pulse. Any tank over 3 feet long will benefit from a VorTech at each end. You might consider keeping your MP20 driver and extra wet side as backups for when you clean your in-service wet side and/or your new driver has a problem, which shouldn't really happen, but you never know.

I have one MP40 in my 100g and it has quite a bit of flow, but I still learning so it may not be enough for some applications.

I have 2 mp40's and a modded MJ 1200 in my 120. The MJ is on the back blowing straight down. The MP40's are one each end ... Full blast on reefcrest. I also have a mp40 in a 50 gallonish tank 24x36x16 reefcrest at 3/4 speed. The flow is nice.
One mp20 does not seem nearly enough to me in a 90. Just my $.02

I have a mp40w on my 90 set at about 80-90% with a mag 9 return and have a wave in my tank that comes close to the rim.I have great back and forth motion on all corals sps,lps soft, zoa and clams. One is plenty for a 90 gal tank.Putting more than that in there and you will have to turn them down,so why waste the money on 2.Just my .02

Most people dont spend 300+ bucks for a wave. If you want a wave spend 150-200 bucks for a used wave box. If you want good flow you will need 2 mp40s on a 90. This is from personal exp.

If you are using a MP40-w for a wavemaker your the one wasting money onless you just cant have the wave box taking up space.

Your right I did not spend $300 for a wave that was just a plus.I am speaking from personal experience as well. One mp40 on my tank causes a wave and gives great flow to the entire tank front, back and both sides. There is not one piece of coral that does not move with the flow in my tank. All corals are healthy and growing.

If you can afford to drop $600 plus on 2 vortech?Great. I believe you only need one,but you can take all the opinions here and make your decision.
Good luck.

Also you will spend more$150-200 on a used wave box and pump to run it.

Look here in the used section. Search is your friend......

Lots of 6-12 month old tunze nano waveboxes in the 150-200 range. They pop up all the time you just have to watch the forums.
