How long can live rock be in a barrel for? in salt water, with a powerhead. and how can you tell if the rock is dead?

at least a couple of months. The bacteria will still live in the rock

If it's kept with a heater and some powerheads, it should be fine indefinitely, although I'd start feeding a bit of fish food now and then, to keep animals alive. Without lighting, the coralline will go fairly rapidly.

I have had some Live Rock in a 75 gallon with a heater & 2 maxijets for about 8 months. I have been keeping it & adding more over time, getting ready to set up my 180 Gallon. I just make sure that the salinity is correct and add a small amount of food to keep everything alive.

I just sold the 180 gallon. so the rock may sit for a while again.

If you take the rock out of the water and smell it, you will know if its bad. If it stinks really bad.....its bad. If it just smells like saltwater, its fine.

Live rock doesn't need light?

Not if you don't want the coralline or other algae, and you add some food from time to time.
