Where do you place the valve on drain line?
right below overflow or before sump?

Why would you have a valve on the drain line? When the pump stops, so does the draining. If you close the line while the pump is running, something will overflow.

I place it right before the sump. I think BeanAnimal said it doesn't really matter though for his drain pipe style and that is basically an improved herbie.

I placed my drain valve in a area that was easy to reach ;)

I dont think it matters if it is high or low (the water in the drain line is always at full siphon).

I have had no problems with my Herbie design.

the return line is below water correct?. If the valve is higher up won't there be air in the line? What diameter line should you run. If it's full siphon is 1 1/4 too large? Is the valve, same size as line or does it really matter, thinking of using a gate valve and there are expensive. Would rather use the 1" .
