Why would I have algae in my water change water sitting in a covered barrel? It goes through a 4 stage RODI unit straight into one barrell, then it flows to the next covered barrel where I mix salt, heat and aerate.

what kind of algae? green? brown? Hard? dust like?

All it takes is one spore. If you place anything from your tank into the barrel (spoon, hose, hand) you run a risk of cross contamination.

Actually there was green algae floating on the top of the water. When I emptied the barrel and cleaned it out I got brown algae on the rag.

How long does the water remain in the barrel?

It was in the barrel with circulation and heater for 7-10 days.
