Hi guys about 2 months ago i set up a 180G tank. In the spirit of keeping the electricity bill low im trying not to have much equipment.

I have currently two over flow boxes, each box flows into a 30 Gal rubber maid bin. These bins each feed to a sequance snapper pump which pumps it back into the tank.

the tank has 5 inches of sand. and is filled with live rock.

Both sumps have 6 inches of sand and calputa.
which are illuminated 24 hours a day.

This is the interesting thing, The sump on the Right the alge bloomed well and is growing, the sump on the left i cant get alge to grow for the life of me. I have collected handfuls of alge and it just dies in a matter of days.

So this is what im thinking,

I want to set up the second sump as an Environmental Gradient zonal filter. (EG). I have read about it in "The Reef aquarium volume 3").

I have looked around the forms for info on it and though i found something but lost it and cant find it again.

I can get my hands on lots of fresh live rock full of sponges.

So this i guess is the question, will the algae and sponges compete for nutrients or will they take up different things?

opinions? feedback ? someone doing it already?

I am planning on doing this so ill keep a log on this thread.
