Electrolysis problem?

Suppose I have two copper wires in my tank and applied a DC voltage to them. What would happen chemically? Would copper ions be liberated into the water? Some sort of precipitate/coating form on one/both wires?

I believe I have been inadvertently doing this by using a defective conductivity probe.

Copper will readily dissolve off and kill invertebrates. :(

Why do you think it defective?

Conductivity probes should not ever have any "wires" exposed to the water. They also are not DC.
