Sorry i am sure there is a thread in here somewhere about this, but anyway I have a recently established 330 gallon tank with about 600 lbs of live rock a fuge, skimmer, chiller, and 3X400 watt MH and 2X actinics I think the tank is good for just about anything planning to try to add a couple MP40W's for christmas to up the flow. Anyway I really love the way the clams look and would like to get a few but don't want to jump in over my head? Is one easier than the other?

A Derasa or Squamosa clam is the easiest. If you choose any clam, larger ones are more likely to make it. Make sure that the facility has not had pinched mantle disease.

Watch the livestock that you add and be sure it is compatible with clams.

What do you mean compatible? as in nippers like angels or something else? I just had to get rid of a Koran because he was nipping my brain

angels can and freq'ly will nip at clams, any kinda angels!
+1 on the derasa/squammies. my first clam is a derasa, substrate dweller, and can get deecently BIG. 6 months and it's put on about 1.5 "

I started right out of the gate with maximas and they are all doing great. I'm up to 4 now.

I'm planning on adding my first clam also. I have 4xt5's and am going to add 2x250w mh 14,000k to 120 gal tank, 24 inches deep. Tank has been set up a year.

is there any certain amount of time that the tank needs to be established before adding the clams? I know they are filter feeders and wasn't sure if the tank needed to be a certain age to have developed all the things they need?

yes definitely wait at least 6 months. it's tough but better for the clams and your wallet. my derasa went in at exactly 6 months and a week. i couldn't wait any longer, and it's still with me. patience is the way to go!
