I added some peppermint shrimp and they ate it. I had a large outbreak in my Nano so added 3 peppermint shrimp and there is very little of it left now.

Peppermint shrimp will eat the as long as you are buying the correct pepps. A lot of stores sell impostors. Here is an article on how to tell the difference. Lysmata wurdemanni (http://fish.suite101.com/article.cfm/peppermint_shrimp_imposters)
I have also had good luck taking vinegar and heating it up in the microwave for about a minute and drawing it up with a needle and syringe, and injecting it into the aiptasia, they disolve instantly and don't return.

Good luck

How big is the tank? I have never had both, but if the tank is big enough I have heard of people having both.
Do you have a lot of aiptasia, or just a few? If you have a lot of them, then pepps are a good choice, if you anly have a couple, then my above procedure works great.
Good luck

The vinegar doesn't hurt the water parameters?

No, as long as you only do a couple per day. Depending on the size of the tank will depend on how huch you can do at once. I have a 75 gallon system and I have safely done 2ml in a day with no ill effects. That will get 5-7 aiptasia.

I use pickling lime for the larger ones, peppermints will go after the smaller ones.

Very concentrated solution of picking lime and a syringe with a thin, sharp needle. If you can reach them, this is very effective for me. Make sure you pierce their body and squirt the solution inside. They retract quickly. Turn off all the pumps.

If they're on a rock that you can easily remove/replace and there are no corals/polyps/etc. near the aiptasia, you can use one of those torch-like butane lighters to fry 'em. I've gotten rid of two aiptasia on a new piece of LR that way and they never came back (10 months and counting, anyway haha). I've used the vinegar in a syringe method too that spleify mentioned in another tank for an aiptasia that showed up at the base of a carnation coral. The coral was not affected by the direct-injection of the pest anemone but I don't recall how much vinegar I used (it was a very small amount in a tuberculin syringe).

Joe's Juice is the way to go, if you can get to the critters.

i was told the same thing but i dont need anymore fish in my tank. aiptasia have killed some of my corals like some zoo's and my pipe organ, i have a 120g tank with 200lb of rock so killing the aiptasia is a pane went out and got some pickling lime today. should i pull out the rock and put the rock in a bucket of water to kill the aiptasia (there's a lot of them like 120 or more on the rocks) or can i just kill them in the tank

I tried adding peppermints to my tank a couple times with a fire shrimp and mysteriously they end up dead the next morning.

Aiptasia X seems to work for me but I have a few that I can't reach so I will probabaly have to get either a peppermint or a butterfly.

I had aiptaisia and a CBB took care of them. I was also lucky he ate anything I gave him too .. was very sad when I had to break down that tank. AFAIK hes still happy and healthy.

I have used aiptaisia-X very successfully, but have added peppermint shrimp to help out. Be careful with what you do - I have read that if the aiptasia feel threatened they will release offspring (Aiptaisia-X is taken in as a food source, but kills the aiptasia...in a "non-threatening" way...

butterfly works great! beautiful fish and if the aiptasia comes back the butterfly will eat them all. plus you dont have to always buy products to treat the aiptasia.

I've always thought butterfly fish are not reef safe?

for small ones, a peppermint shrimp that is bigger than the aptasia will eat it.... for bigger ones, use aptasia x

Aiptasia X from redsea is really really good, do a search on youtube and youll see the anemones implode. accordint to a whole lot of ppl they dont come back.
from personal experience i can tell you that lemon and hot water WILL kill one, but next mnth youll have 50, i just had to cook my rock because i kept picking at 1 and ended up with 500 in 2 months.

Copperband not the best choice, they are fairly tough to keep alive. Look on the fish forum, there is a sticky if you really want to have one of these.
I like Joe's Juice, had a pretty bad outbreak but found this successful with a little diligence. Also immensely fun to kill them off yourself, IMO>

I have been able to use a Kalkwasser Mix to rid my tanks of the aiptasia infestations. Just make sure that if you have Star Polyps or Pulsing Xena not to use too much at a time, they do not like the sudden change and can be killed. This is the cheapest way, I have not tried the shrimp yet.

Just added 3 Peppermint Shrimp to my 30 gallon that is covered with Aiptasia. Will update with beginning photo and several after improvement. 20 blue leg hermits picked off all the extra algea before I had added the shrimp. I have moved at least 7 of the hermits to my 55gal to keep it cleaned up recently.
