I have had cheato in my ruge for quite a while. Anyhow i stated to notice it thinning out. In a month it was gone compleetly. What happened? My water perameteres never changed and are all looking good. I have plenty of fish and overfeed, so by all means i should have plenty of cheato. My light is brand new. Any ideas?

You have to excess nutrients/proteins for the chaeto to thrive and feed from. Did you have a the fuge lite?

Are you running GFO in a reactor? Some folks have experienced chaeto die off when running GFO.

Chaeto does need NO3 and PO4 to "thrive" its possible you tank is to clean to support the chaeto. Are you dosing vinegar or vodka, or a different carbon source?

It might also be in your best interest to do a big water change, as the die off could have released some nasties back into the water column.

If you're not doing regular water changes and/or dosing it, your system could have a low iron concentration. I've read this is needed for macro-algae just like is is for plants.

All things considered, I'd say stepping up the volume and/or frequency of water changes would have helped a lot. :)

You could also have something else that's out-competing the Chaeto for the nutrients.

Well this actually happened about 3 months ago.
No to the GFO or any carbon use.

Have you tried putting any new chaeto in?
