Last night while viewing my tank with a flashlight, we saw hundreds of small fish like things that were moving in jerking motions. There were extremely small, and some of them were white and some of them had an orange tint to them. They had a big head small body, reminded me of a tadpole. It was fascinating to see them come out almost as thought something (but what?) had hatched.

Not sure if they fall under your description, but they could have been amphipods. They usually pop out at night. They swim incredibly fast.

If you want to really be amazed, get a set of night vision goggles. With no lights on you wont believe the things that come out.

I might have the same things. Do they look a badminton (http://images.google.com/imgres?imgurl=http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/d/dc/Volant_badminton.jpg&imgrefurl=http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Volant_badminton.jpg&usg=__uOo4eAmaEdBDv4rAsbkoQ01IwAo=&h=600&w=800&sz=46&hl=en&start=33&um=1&itbs=1&tbnid=BXbCd9EEijydOM:&tbnh=107&tbnw=143&prev=/images%3Fq%3Dbadminton%26ndsp%3D18%26hl%3Den%26safe%3Doff%26rlz%3D1T4DKUS_enUS307%26sa%3DN%26start%3 D18%26um%3D1)? Mine do and I really am stumped on 'em.

Man, I don't know why I never thought of that. I have a pair in one of my bags. I'm gonna have to try that out.

Randy , It's funny how your tank transforms at night. it's like a whole other world.

If my missus caught me sitting in the dark looking at the tank with nightvision goggles she'd think I'd finally gone over the edge !! Bad enough when I bought a red bulb. She came home from work and thought I'd turned the apartment into a brothel :D

If not, I'm not quite sure what you're seeing.

Copepods, amphipods....mysis shrimp don't generally swim in a jerking motion but they might be a possibility...............

I agree - most likely copepods and/or amphipods - my amphipods tend to be a lot larger and are about 2-4mm in size.

You can also buy a filter lens for your DSLR camera - takes stunning photos...

Thanks for all the great information. I'm still not sure what they are, but it sounds like my night time viewing experience was a sliver of things to come.
