I'm changing from a 29g to 55g. In the 29, I have @ 35-40lbs LR, 20lbs LS, and inhabitants (2 clowns, 1 fire fish, 1 diamond goby, 1 cleaner shrimp, and CUC). All of that is going into the 55g.

I'll add 20 lbs cured LR and 20 Lbs LS to the new tank. I'll use RO/DI water. Do I still need to cycle the new tank?

The only reason I could think of would be the new rock.

Thanks

Nobody can really tell you 100%. You will more than likely have a short cycle. I would setup a QT for your livestock and test after two days to see where you are.

Are you curing the LR yourself? If not, I'd make plans to cure it at home.

Thought I'd buy it cured from a local LFS. Though, now that I think about it, I might just add dry base rock, toss in my current LR, and allow the dry to become live.

If the dry rock is clean enough, that'd be safe.

you will get a small cycle from moving the sand and most times when adding new rock weather its cured or not.

I have had great success with adding a mix of dry and live. I will say that I have never done it with much anything living being added to the tank. If you take this route you will probably get some sort of cycle, depending on what is left on the dry rock.
