detaching from rocks

I bought a maxima which is doing really well maybe about 6 months ago. My problem is, is that I set him up on a rock and since he has attached himself to it. Now that he is getting bigger I don't quite like the spot where I set him anymore. Is there any way to get him off the rock without damaging him?

u have to cut the byssal threads as far away from the clam as possible. sharp knife. done right, no prob at all, and it is easy. done wrong, that means cutting the foot, almost assured death.
