Because of future build considerations that might include adding a chiller next summer, I have to get a return pump a little bigger than I really need. I will have to install a gate valve on the return line to throttle back the Eheim 1260. What effect does that have on that pump? Does it run louder, wear it out quicker, allow it to run at less wattage?

With the valve on the output side of the pump there should be no concerns. I have run a few of these for years like this just as you are describing.

It does not do anything piping, tubing, chillers, equipment and head does not do. Throttling does not harm a pump. Plugging it in does.

I've have the same pump and have ball value on return line, just like you are doing. It has been running for almost a year with no problem. Great pump.
