I recieved a free brand new heater for my 10g tank and it is a 300watt. At its lowest setting, my tank stays at a stable 82 edgrees. Should I get a lower wattage heater? I am just starting out and have nothing in the tank but freshwater to check all the equipment out so no worries about that.

That is an awfully large heater. If it ever acted up on you, you'd have fish stew almost instantly.
I'd go buy a smaller one, I think you only need about a 50watt for a tank that small.

82 Is a bit high I try not to let my tank get over 80 you may want to tone it down a notch If I remember right I think its like 3-5 watts per gallon so you should be good with a 50 watt a 100 watt if your into overkill the 300 watt would be great for say a 55gal but most people will run 2 say 150 or 200 watts versus one big one FYI
