I`m making a sps tank. 75 gal. 30 gal long sump. I`m thinking of buying an reef octopus dnwb-200 protein skimmer 2009 model rating of 300 to 350 gal. tank . ? is is it too big, too small, or OK. ps. it cost $340 bucks, and that is the most I can spend. Thanks in advance.:sad2:

Just my opinion, but unless you're planning on a really heavy fish load, that's prolly too big. Not that the over-skimming would be a bad thing, but you could save money on a smaller model. That one is rated for 3x your system volume or 200g more than what you'll have.

I think most people run overpowered skimmers for SPS dominant systems. I run the Reef Octopus nwb110 (100g rating) on a 60g SPS system and it's more than enough for me.

I agree that that skimmer is a little big, but with that being said, I would do it. I am about to post a tank build thread. My future tank will be a 150 with a 50g sump (I believe) and my skimmer is a MRC 2R rated up to 450. Even with that skimmer I am thinking of modding it (that is one huge reason why I wanted this skimmer) to handle a larger load. I think the extra skimming power will help you with the SPS and you can have a heavily stocked tank if you choose. You may at some point need to dose trace minerals (you may be able to avoid this with a Ca reactor). Long post short-- I would use that skimmer.

I'm a firm believer of overskimming. I'm running a alpha cone 250 on my 150gal. With a good skimmer, I can add more fish and keep them fat and full. Plus, upgrading is always a possibility in this hobby so having a big skimmer will make it easier in the long run
