View Full Version : Radiums with Ice Caps?

Ok, so I already ordered them because after doing research I was convinced to give 250W Radiums a try. I'm switching from XM 20ks. Now, after doing even more reading the fact that Radiums require a special ballast to be "most effective" might be true although many are running them on Ice Caps among other ballasts.

My question is are the Radiums gonna work ok with my Ice Cap ballasts?

Setup is three 250W bulbs in Lumenarc reflectors over a 225g (72x30x24) - mostly SPS - bulbs approx 11" from water.

TIA

Oh, I must throw in that I actually have a borrowed, 1 year old Radium in one of the end positions right now and it is noticeably brighter than my 8 month old XM's.

I coudn't tell you about the "best ballast", but on your last comment, keep in mind the specturm shift of the bulb. You loose the "blue" without loosing the "brightness". So it can actually make the bulb look brighter, but it is putting out a lower spectrum. Ice Cap's seem to be the most universally accepted ballast and even if it isn't the optimum combination you will be just fine with a 250w over a 24" tank.

If you like a "blue" look, I'd recommend running the Radiums with an icecap ballast. If you prefer a whiter look (granted, it's still 20K), I'd go with the Blue Wave

This advice only applies to 250W, if you went 400W, the "whiter" option would be the out of production HQI ballasts by PFO or sunlight supply.

He's actually provided links to the incorrect ballasts. You'll need the Blue Wave 3 or Blue Wave 7 (if running dual Radiums). HQI -> Radium.

Radiums will run fine on electronics, but they will be underdriven. HQI ballasts(M80 ballasts) will run them to spec wattage.

Thanks for the correction FranktheTankTx!

I run Radium 400W on Icecap in concert with Giesmann 14.5K 400W within the same Sfiligoi "Twin" Fixture, so the extra blue from the radium is helpful in my case.

My post applies only to 250 watt radiums

You will be fine. I run a radium on a 250w icecap on a 24" deep tank. Grows sps at the bottom. Will have a great color too.

they will be blue, but pretty low par

Thanks for all the input! Good info. I will fire the new ones up when they get here and see how well they do.

looking to see where this leads. i plan on running this exact setup (250w radiums on IC ballasts) on my 75g pretty soon :)

ps. any pics available as examples? :)

are you guys all talking about single ended or hqi?

single ended

radium's only come single ended as far as i know. i've measured the PAR (via Apogee) off the radiums vs. 14K bulbs and it's not far off on icecap electronics. no way the PAR is "low". Mark runs a tank with 250W radiums with the Blue Wave 3 plus old school VHO's. Scroll down to post 384 here: http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1669158&page=34

I run a Lumatek 250w ballast and I'm getting ready to change over to Raidum. From what I understand the Lumatek will run the bulb at spec.

i run radiums on icecap ballasts also , works fine and nice color.

Tagging along, getting ready to switch from Reeflux 20k's on my 90g to Radiums. I have IceCaps too.

Radiums do come in DE, i've seen them in 150w flavor.

it appears only DE is 150W. 250W and 400W are SE only.

Well, the Radiums are running and they look very good to me. Brighter and less blue is my overall comments. I'm interested to see if any growth changes happen. I may be nuts bit I already think some of my acros have grown more in the last 2 days than the last two weeks. Could be wishful thinking though. I take weekly pics so we'll let them be the judge. Thanks again for all the input!

Radium 250 watt bulbs run best off an M80 HQI 250 watt ballast. Brighter with higher PAR.

So I'm gona try to revive this thread,

I have a 90galllon with 2 250w 12k Reflux no actinics... powered by Icecaps.

I'm ready to change bulbs, what is the cenis.... 20k Reflux or 20k Radiums??

I definately think the 12k reflux are to white with no actinics...

Thanks!

I have to say that after running them now since right before Christmas, I haven't seen any major changes in my tank. The color doesn't seem to be that far off from the XM 20k's I was running but they do seem a little brighter to me. By that, I mean the tank overall seems to be lit up more. I do run VHO actinics during the entire lighting period so that it likely affecting the colors I am seeing. I would also admit that as far as color goes I'm not very good at telling a difference unless the setups are running side by side. I was more interested in the changes it would or wouldn't make to the tank. The corals seem to be growing at the same pace and what little algae there is hasn't changed any. I'm considering swapping the ballasts out with HQI's or swithcing to 400W setups next.
