View Full Version : Calling 400 watt Radium users

I am running a 400 watt radium and was wondering how people liked it on the SLS Galaxy ballast? I am running it on an Icecap ballast and do not like the way it looks. I had used it on a PFO HQI ballast and loved the crisp white with a hint of blue look. When I got a new light fixture, it came with an Icecap ballast. Now that PFO went out of business, I can't seem to find a PFO HQI ballast. So, I am looking at changing to the Galaxy ballast.

I am wondering if it will look closer to the HQI ballast and better than the Icecap. Any experience and/or pictures would be great.

I run my 400w Radium on a Galaxy and the color is okay. Kinda dim IMO. They do look better when run off an HQI

on of my LFS runs ONLY radiums on galaxy ballasts... i personally LOVE their spectrum/output on them. colors pop crazily.

Thanks for input. I think I don't think I am going to gain much with the Galaxy over the Icecap. I guess I will keep looking for a PFO or SLS HQI ballast.

I posted this just a few hours ago on an other thread, the ballast to overdrive the Radium I had was the BlueWave and the core in it was the SonAgro 430w HPS core. It was a dual ballast so when the one core went out I bought the Sola 430 to replace it. It's the same spec as the SonAgro so if you want a little DIY project,

I have a sunlight supply electronic ballast with a built in timer I can give you a killer deal on. It's 400w and was built into a huge indoor planter at work. The reflector is not nice and the bulb is yellow, but like I said I can give you a killer deal on it.

Let me know.

Are your icecap ballasta hqi ballasts?

Have you looked into using a Lumatek? It's an e-ballast and suppose to burn 20% brighter than regular electronic ballasts. They also claim that it will run any bulb at spec. The newer ones have a selectable dial so you can choose between 175w, 250w, and 400w.

I have one of the older one's, 250w running a Phoenix 14k and it looks great. Although I am thinking about changing to a Radium to see what it will do.
