I know there are a lot of variables involved but I'd like to get a ballpark avg on bulb life. I've read MH is 6-18mos and T5 is 16-24 mos, how often do you change your bulbs?

Which is most cost effective?

Well i run t5's on my tank and i let them go for a year max... I mean after 10-11 months my tank starts to get that green algae which usually is when i replace them, Most people change their bulbs every 6-8months but it also depends on what your keeping. I'm not sure why but this pass month or so (pushing 12 months on my bulbs) I've seen more growth out of my bird nest and acro's.

Thats interesting. I have been running the same VHO's in my tank for almost a year now. I had a hair algae problem about 2 months ago. I was about to replace the bulbs but instead I started running GFO and got rid of the algae. I still havent got around to changing them as I am experiencing the best growth I have ever had too!

Nice to hear i'm not the only one. I'm fine with the algae if it means more growth :P

I would love to see it.
I used to just replace every six months as recommended, starting to think that was a marketing plan from the bulb manufacturer.
