I am looking for a high quality quiet external pump. It needs to be pressure rated and push 1100+ gph. I am looking at the panworld 150ps, Gen-X pcx55hd and Iwaki MD55RLT.From what I have found, it seems that the PW is good and is the quietest. Do anyone have any input????

I have the panworld and its fan cooled. For a fan cooled pump its relatively quiet but if you want super silent then the Poseidon is the way to go. I use the Poseidon as my winter pump and the Panworld as my summer pump.

+1. I've seen these in action and I had to ask my friend if they were even on. the downfall, for most people, is that they add heat to the tank because they're water cooled.

I have the same Gen-X. It's relatively quiet, but definitely not silent. I have not tried the others you mentioned.

I agree Poseidon pumps are very quiet. I have one and it works great in the winter. However it does heat up the tank in the summer a few degrees, more so than other external pumps. Just keep that in mind, you might need to do some modifications to get the heat down (lights, chiller etc.)

Thanks for all the input. I am looking for a pressure rated model so I can use it on a skimmer. Do anyone see an issue with having the increased heat with a skimmer???? looks like the PS4 is rated above 1000+ gph.

+3 for Poseidon...

I have 2 PS4's, and will have a 3rd next week and love them. They do add a bit of heat, but to be honest, if you have a larger tank I don't think it's that noticeable.

The Poseidons add no more heat than a submersible of the same wattage would. The 1 and 2 use 98 watts, the 3 and 4 use 140. I have used them for years, there is no quieter pump, I cannot hear it with my ear right next to it. How much it will heat your tank depends on the size tank and if you already have heat problems.

I love my Poseidon pumps.
I use 3 of them ( 2- P4's and a P2) on my tank and cannot hear any noise from all three together.
The only thing I'm wondering is,,, are they a pressure rated pump?
Will this work for a skimmer pump?

Yep, they are rated for up to 50psi line pressure.

Can't beat the reeflo.
I have a genx and panworld 150 sitting on a shelf. Way too noisy. The dart is very quiet, burns 150 watts and pushes 3600gph.

So it looks like the posiedon PS4 is flow biased and not pressure rated. So now I am done to choosing between the Reeflo tarpon (1440gph) and panworld 150.

Do anyone have any input on the Tarpon? What is different between that and the Dart? Is the Dart just the flow biased one and the tarpon pressure rated??????

I have a super dart, dead silent cant hear it run at all, a buddy has a reeflo marlin which is pressure rated, its slightly noisy not to bad at all though, you mainly hear the water flowing through his manifold and the ball valve connections

how big of a skimmer you planning on running?

200 watts of pumping power for a skimmer, whew.

750 gallon system?

Yeah, I know. Dual becketts and is overkill for a 200g system. The PW is like 175w and the Reeflo is like 200w.

sorry, i know off topic, and i am being a weenie pointing it out, BUT you could get a more efficient skimmer for LESS than the cost of getting a new pump!!!

I run nothing but Quiet one Pumps. A quiet one 6000 (1360GPH)would be a good choice for a start, or they can go alot bigger. I run mine externally and internally with not a sound but a slight humm. Im sure they are cheaper than the other pumps as well.

Very true, but this skimmer fits what I want to do. It is upgradable, fits in the area I want, good price for it, and is a great skimmer. The cost of the skimmer and pump will come out to be about $200 for me. :) Thanks for the suggestion, and I will keep that in mind if the power usage becomes an issue.

I recently picked up the pressure rated 120 watt 100PX 790 GPH. It does its job but could be quieter. My fan runs 25% of the time to cool my tank after an hour of the the MH's being on.

Running a beckett? Go with the Panworld. I'm not so sure the Reeflo Tarpon or whatever the pressure-rated one is called will be any quieter or more efficient than the Panworld. I'm using the 200-ps on my ETSS. You can hear the fan, but if you position it just right it quiets down a lot.

Posedon pump is really quiet, but raises your tank temp, so I switch pumps int the summer, was going to buy a panworld

I have the panworld and its fan cooled. For a fan cooled pump its relatively quiet but if you want super silent then the Poseidon is the way to go. I use the Poseidon as my winter pump and the Panworld as my summer pump.

Doesn't the Reeflo Dart and Snapper have 1" outlets? or 3/4?

Av8bluewater

Dart has 2" In 1.5" out.

I have two panworlds... the 100 Is a little quieter than the 150. Both are too noisy for me. Go with the dart if you need the GPH... it can't be beat. Never heard a poseidon but I'll take peoples word for it being quite.. It doesn't come close to the performance of a dart though.

I really need a pressure rated pump, so the Dart and posiedons will not work. They will not push the dual becketts on my skimmer. Thinking the Panworld 150ps is the best option at this point. Thanks

I use a tarpon, great pump and super quiet. I can't really hear it at all.

Panworld got my vote. After a simple mod like this http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=828812, it sounds like a running fridge. I bought a snapper after seeing many people's positive reviews but I took it down and sold it the second I heard it run. It was no way near quiet.
