need some help in size and design of a sump for a 180g tank that i'm trying to get together, i haven't never built my own sump, please help

Try uysing the sump calculator to figure how big you need it to be when the power goes off.

As for designs, the only limit is your imagination. I prefer the old standard 3 compartment flow through design but here are some ideas:

Thats good start. Its really gonna be all about what your tanks needs are. Like fishdoc said the standard 3 compartment is a good design. But also things to consider might be What size skimmer will you have ? (the footprint) Are you gonna run any type of reactor? Do you want to run a refugium in your sump ? The sky is the limit, well actually its the size of your wallet. Just take your time and have fun !
