Hi, that all depends on how deep you want the sand to be.

Not terribly what is minimum to still get the beneficial bacteria for nitrification

Check out this site,areamulchandsoils.com. on top put in your tank measurements length width and depth. the calculation is in tons so just multiply say for ha ha's .12x 2000 and that would be 225 lbs of sand. good luck

I have a 24 inch wide 5 foot long 125 and I bought 120 lbs of sand for it..
Well after putting it in I realized I didn't want 5 inches of sand in my tank,, soo
I removed something like 40 lbs and I roll with around 80 lbs and it gives me around 2-3 inches of sand..

I would say a sand bed of 2-3" is good!

There's a calculator on the RC home page that'll work. I'd just use an inch or so for looks, most likely. I'm not sure that the sandbed will do much filtration in any case.

Tank length in inches x width in inches x desired depth divided by 20 = pounds of sand needed

Sand bed calculator
http://www.reefcentral.com/calc/SandBed.php

I have a 36x18, 70g oceanic. With those measurements, and a desired sand depth of 1.5", it comes to 51lbs of sand, so I bought 60lbs.
The typical 125 measures roughly 72x18x24. With those measurements and a desired sand depth of 1.5", it comes to 101lbs of sand

Measure your inside dimensions, and then play around with the calculator from there with different sand depths.

Do you have a refugium figured into your system? If yes, then 1"-1.5" sand depth in the DT is what I would say.
If no refugium, then 5-6" sand bed. (Someone correct me if thats wrong for a depth in the DT)
