I have fine powder sand mixed with some crushed coral in my tank and I hate it! I really would like to completely remove it and replace with a large diameter sand like argonite. How would this effect my bacteria and biological filtration? I have already started syphoning out a little sand when I do water changes but at this rate it would take months.

Tank info:
40B - 5 months old
2x Koralia #2 (no skimmer or sump - weekly 5 gallon waterchanges)
200W Stealth Heater
1" of fine sand and crushed coral
about 50lbs of live rock
Maroon clown
Firefish goby
Coral Beauty
2 scarlet hermits
1 turbo snail
A couple zoo frags and small mushrooms

There should be no problem if you remove a 1/4 of the sand at a time (one week between). Siphon all the sand in one area and add the new (washed) sand back into the bare area.
