can i change my live sand

i would like to get the substrate out of my tank and replace with live sand.
would anybody not recommend or recommend doing this? any insight would be appreciated.

A few questions first:
What type of substrate is it?
How long has it been in the tank?
How deep is the substrate?
What size tank?
How much live rock do you have?

i currently have the crushed aragonite that came with my Redsea Max. i had an algae problem and had to remove some substrate. the algae is gone now but i have a very shallow sand bed. i have had this tank running for almost 3 years. i have a 35g and maybe an inch and a half substrate in some places and almost 3 inches in the back of the tank i probably have 25-30 lbs of rock.

i would prefer to change than to add, anybody with this kind of experience?
