I have just recently bought a new 90 gallon tank off Craigslist and I have a few questions about starting a new tank that has been set up before. I have been in the hobby for a little over a year now so I know a little bit but there is a lot for me to learn.

The fist question is how much flow do I need going through the sump tank, and how big would the sump need to be for the flow. Right now I have a 20 gallon sump that goes to my 46 gallon.

Flow can be whatever you want it to be, just make sure your overflow can handle your return. Also that 20 gallon should be fine but a bigger one would only benefit. Hope that helps, Wiz ;)

Here are a few pictures of the tank, skimmer, sump, and two fish I got from the guy.

The skimmer is a SeaClone 150 I think but I’m not so sure. I will not be using this skimmer but I just wanted to know how good it was. The picture with the fish is a holding tank until the weekend; I think they should be fine.

I was not sure if there could be to much flow in the sump. Also, is there suppose to be a certain amount of water going through the sump like 300 gph if it is a 90 gallon tank?

Thanks Fish_wiz2

The guy that sold the tank to me also gave me some rock and sand. He said the rock is Fiji live rock that has died or is almost dead. I did not ask about the sand.

1. So the first question is how do I cure the rock again?

2. The other question is how do I know if the sand is good or not? Or if everyone just buys new sand from the store just to make sure it’s ok. It’s about 40 Lbs of both rock and sand.

Does this rock look funny or is it just me?
