Hey, just put a new clam in my tank and about 6 of my blueleg and red hermit crabs made a bee line straight to him and are crawling all over him. Is it likely they will try and eat him? His about 6 inches.....

They love new rocks, they're just checking it out. They'll only eat him if he's dead.

I think they are just gonna give him a little bit of a cleaning...

Seems like they are going up to the fleshy part and trying it out!

if they're going after the flesh, then the clam is not well and will need protection and TLC to recover. though it is very common for the CUC to come over and scour new clams shells for new tasty foods.

use the drilled soda bottle trick for protection, but if crabs have nibbled already, the clam might be too far gone

They usually won't go after a healthy clam. Hope yours is doing okay :/.

The clam is doing great! After the first day they all left him alone. I guess they were just checking the new guy. Thanks to all for responding!

sure. I'm not exactly sure what kind of clam it is! I think it's a Dersa. I bought it at a LFS for $60 and it is already quite big..... Also, how do you add a photo without it being a thumbnail?

oh, man I need some help. Tonight when I came home from work and looked in the tank I saw 5-6 of those damn pyramidal snails (sp?)! I took the clam out and picked them off. What Should I do?!

Leave the clam on the sand so he won't attach to anything. Take him out and clean him really well then once a week to clean him off. Use a tooth brush and clean him off with this. I also break off all the scutes to make sure you are able to clean off all the eggs. Use a small tea spoon, you can knocks these off very easy by chip side way at them. After two or three weeks without seen any snails, you are home free and just check them to make sure you did not miss two and they start a new population.
Good luck which you don't need, just a little persistent in clean them out and eliminate them from your tank.
