I have an Eheim 1260 as my return pump, and I have 5/8" clear flexible tubing as my return line. The guy at my lfs said that if I just push the tubing over the pumps output (I dont know what its called, but the part the water comes out of), it should stay without any help. That's the setup I have, but I have yet to try to turn the pump on because I'm afraid it will shoot the tubing off and start spraying water everywhere.

Does anyone have a recommendation for how to secure the tubing better? I looked for ring clamps at Lowes, but I could only find metal ones. Any help would be appreciated.

Put plastic cable ties around the tubing where it connects and it will hold forever. All of my plumbing is secured that way on my 90 fowlr with sump, fuge, skimmer, etc.
Hope this will give you some peace of mind.

They will definitely be all over any hardware store, including HD. They are commonly called "ny-ties"(nylon wire-ties) or "Zip-ties". Ask anyone there, and they will land you directly where they are. Chances are that it will flop off if you have a lot of pressure, and no method of securing the tube.

They have plastic hose clamps on the market that would be a better alternative.

after using hundreds of zip ties for securing plastic tubing, I have actually decided that they dont help that much, particularly on non-barbed connections. this is in contrast to hoze clamps that really work to secure, but cant be used underwater because of the metal. The key to a good underwater flex tube connection is to buy reasonably thick walled tubing like the fiber reinforced vinyl stuff that takes some force to put on and possibly heating of the tubing in hot water. If you cant pull if off without twisting you can be assured that it will not shoot off.

What? No! The pump has lock collars that clamp onto the hose! What the hell no zip ties required! Is it missing the screw lock collar?

Also best to use Eheim tubing it rocks.

Well I pushed the tube on as far as I could, then double zip-tied it. I couldn't pull it off the pump after that so I think it will hold up. I'll give an update if I have any problems with the setup.
