When you dose vodka this will cause an increase in the population of bacteria. Bacteria do produce chemicals that are toxic. The GAC will help to reduce those toxins and others found in a reef aquarium along with proper water changes and good skimming.

The increased bacteria will uptake phosphate and have a reducing effect. However, the amount of phosphate reduced by bacteria is much less than the nitrate they reduce. If your phosphate level is below 0.03 ppm and the bacteria population can maintain your level of phosphate below 0.03 then perhaps you do not need to run GFO. If you are having problems with algae or other pests, I would continue to run GFO.

I would keep up any maintenance you are doing currently. This includes GFO, GAC, and water changes.
