View Full Version : Flow in tank

I'm in the planning stages and am going to have either a 48"x30"x20" with a 55 gallon sump. I am planning on having a mixed reef and was wondering how big should my return pump be so i can also plan on how big my overflow should be? I was hoping to get away with a couple big koralia's too for in tank flow. With enough turnover rate to the sump and with the 2 koralia's is this going to be enough or should i go with a closed loop?

For my 120g. I have a mag 18 which is 1800 GPH for my sump return. then i have two koralia 4's and a 3. That setup is a very nice flow I couldn't be happier.

For a mixed reef you should probably be shooting for around 30x turnover rate, more if you can manage it without blasting your corals. Figure out what 30x would be, take away the flow you get from the koralias, that's your target number for a return pump. Keep in mind... it's much easier to dial back a pump that's too big than it is to get more flow out of a pump that's too small.

So total water volume or tank volume? tank volume is 125 total will be 180 gal. 125x30 would be 3750 and would take multiple pumps to do this. Can this be acheived with return from sump and a closed loop system?
