In nutshell. The carbon added to the water is a food source for bacteria. The bacteria also utilize nitrates and phosphates. So as their population rises they should help to remove/process the nutrients. The bacteria are then removed by aggressive skimming, and area lso eaten by corals and other filter feeders.

There is literally a ton of discussion going on about carbon dosing where you can learn the ins and outs.

Thats where you need to start reading. It can be as simple as sugar, or as complicated as zeovit.
