Im usingGE silicone II on some bulk heads but I've read where silicone I is the only one to use..So im confused, which one is it..Silicone II says 100% silicone and so does silicone I..

I believe you are OK with that product...what you don't want are the silicones with added anti-bacterial...IIRC GE II does not have any.

Don't quote me on that, LOL! Check your label and make sure there is no anti-bacterial listed.

There should be no reason to use anything on bulkheads.

You are correct about that..but I'm doing something different with my sump which needs silicone..

If you are going to use something on bulkheads, use silicone GREASE, it never sets up and is much easier to clean up. Its available in the plumbing dept at the big box stores.

GE silicone I is what you want! the GE silicone II has "bioseal" or something like that which is to prevent mold and i dont belive its reef safe

GE II is a no-go since the additive is not reef safe. A fellow reefer down here used GE II and nuked his tank. Use only GE I. It is safe after curing. Good luck!

Are you sure? I looked it up and didn't see any anti-bacterial additive listed.

Yep GE Silicone I is what you want, NOT GE II

ok now im confused..Has anyone used II without any problem?I did a google search and people have used II to seal there whole aquarium with no ill effects..Strange,maybe fo piece of mind I'll start over, but then again, its only about 3" of II that I used on a 350 gallon setup, would that small amount even make a difference.

Me too...I just looked up the MSDS for GE silicones (boy they make a lot of different types)...from what I can see the ingredients for both I & II are pretty standard for 100% silicone and the reagents used to cure them...perhaps they are available with or without the "bio-seal" mildew additive...I guess maybe it's safer to start over with the I, just in case.

Agreed, GE Silicone I NOT II

at HD they have aquarium safe silicone in the glue section in a blue tube with a label on the package that says AQUARIUM SAFE.

GE I Window & Door silicone is what most people use on aquariums, as there are many GE I silicones to choose from....
Do NOT use anything labeled "Kitchen & Bath" as they have anti-mildew additives which has been reported to cause "issues" with peoples aquariums...

If you are in need of just a small amount of silicone, then I would do as littlefish09 suggests and just buy a small 2.8 oz tube of DAP Aquarium Safe silicone at HD for a couple of dollars...

FWIW, I am about to start my new tank build using GE RTV108 silicone which is FDA approved as is Dow Corning 732 (unlike any of the GE I silicones)

JM2C....HTH some

Good luck :)

GE 1 door and window is what you want.

GE 2 might or might not be safe. If it says bioseal or says kitchen in bath it is no good.

If you don't mind me asking... what are you doing different with a bulkhead that requires silicone? IME / IMO you are probably using a bulkhead where a uni-seal should be used and might be setting yourself up for an expensive failure.

i have used both GE I and GE II with no problems. i have re-done tanks and built custom sumps. All tanks are doing great. But again this is just my experience.

but like others have said don't use anything that says for bathroom/ kitchen or mildew resistant.

How long do you guys usually wait until you use the item that was siliconed? I usually wait about 1 week, but I'm working on a new project that I hope I can get away with 2-3 days. What do you think?

I went with the silicone II..it was a small amount needed so I don't think there should be any effect..Maybe if i was doing the whole aquarium I'd be more concerned..I googled this before I did it and didn't find one post that said I used silicone II and it destroyed my tank..But will find out shortly if it does any damage because the water is in and circulating:D..Think there's always gonna be controversary even if I come back tommorow and say everythings looking great..

for me its only 24 hours..The new silicone II im using says it sets and ready to go after 3 hours..

depends on size of bead and temp. i always placed a heater in or next to the tank that is being cured and always waited at least 24hrs. also depends on water volume. more equals more pressure. i rushed a project once and when i filled the sump it just below apart the barriers. so do it once and don't rush, its not worth it.

I usually add a few dabs of crazy glue when building...in any case, I will wait 48 hours at the very least.

Glad I don't have to wait a week like I usualy do :-)

thanks!

So it's been over 24hrs now and there's been no reaction to the fish or corals at all using siliconeII..I'm not saying it's safe, but for my tank it's been fine:beer:
