i have a peacock mantis coming in on tuesday afternoon, but am concerned about their being too much light in the room at that time of day. my tank is in the family room, which has big windows and no shades to draw.

i am debating either

1) acclimating him in the basement
2) waiting until evening to acclimate

anyone have tips or experiences to share about acclimation?

Just turn off the tank lights and acclimate in the ambient light. I wouldn't worry too much. If you're adamant about acclimating in the dark, you can acclimate it in the box that it comes in and cover the top of the box so it's dark on the inside.

I would go one step further and suggest placing the bag in a 5g bucket and doing the acclimation in that. Thats what I do. I usually put what ever into a Glad container then place that into a bucket and start my drip line and let the Glad container overflow into the bucket.

Only advice is what you already know. Take your time, if it takes 4 hours then so be it. It's better to take 5 or 6 hours then try and do it in an hour and a half.
