Being I live near the maryland shore, I was thinking about getting out (cabin fever) and going to the beach to search for some critters and live sand. Yea, yea, i know I am supposed to go out 50 miles or so and get some pristien sand, but, still, the thought of having some REAL beach sand in a 10 gallon tank. Also a good excuse to go to the beach, lol.

I was thinking of going to the beach, collect some sand and see what is in the tise pools. Thing of it is, here in VA I do belive the water temp is around 40 degrees. If i was to take that water and sand, heat it up to room temp, what would I be left with? I am NOT worried about a cycle, but, at the same time I want to also make sure there is some useable life left in there too.

I do plan on letting the soup stew for a few months min and do some water changes also. This should help clean up any dirty water and heavy metals "floating" around. Add a emerald crab or two , some food, a nice peices of LR and whala, new fauna for my main tank in 3 months or so.

Question is, with the cold water, is there anything in there that would be good for my tank later on?

Maybe talk to Paul B. He does this kind of stuff with his tank and has probably a lot of info that might help. Look for the 35 year old reef thread.
