What would be some advice to a college student who lives is a one bedroom apartment who wants the best tank he can get. Not a whole lot of room

Get a good Yob when you get out of school.

A 24gal Biocube I think would work great!

yes, a good "yob" will do it...haha,, couldn't resist.

I agree with pco1988, a biocube would be what i'd recommend. Keep in mind, the lighting won't support SPS, clams, etc.

My advice would be to do a fresh water planted tank with a variety of nice tetras.

Buy a used tank, I live in an apartment and found a spot to put in a 90 Gallon.

1. Biocube or Nanocube are probably best. I knew a few people that had nanocubes with success.
2. Make sure you plan for what you are going to do on break or if you're gone for the weekend. I suffered several losses when moving the tank around. Not worth it if you can avoid it and the bigger the tank the more opportunity for loss.

Avoid the temptation to go too big before you're done with school. It's worth it when you're settled in some place long term and you can finally start to build your system w/o the worry that it'll be torn down in the next couple years.

Well see I have a 29g with a 15g sump with a 150w sunpod right now but I really want sps and clams but I just don't know if first off that setup will support them and with it being a small tank if the water quality will be hard to keep at a high level

Craigslist craigslist craigslist. Frequently see tanks being sold at 25% to 50% of value. Or less.

I normally see tanks sold at 150% to 200% of their value. Have you seen $50 10 gallon tanks?! :P

But yes, CL is a great resource.

I'm keeping a 20 high right now and water quality isn't hard to keep up as long as you stay at it. I do 2-3 gal water changes each week and test my other params every couple weeks or so

The best advice you will ever get: Put a picture of a really nice tank on a computer screen saver and concentrate on your studies.

A 12g nano might be cheap enough. If you keep up with the work, they don't require a skimmer or a lot of other equipment, although a RO/DI filter, or perhaps refillable DI cartridges, would be required, IMO.

Craigslist bro! Find yourself a nice 40-55 or even 75 gallon tank with stand for probably $100-250, stand and tank with extras.

Get a rodi unit for your water $200, argonite sand dry, don't get the live sand junk. Get a eshopps skimmer $140, and do 1/4 live rock and 3/4 base rock (it will seed into live over a month or two).

$500-600 will have you up and running for a fish only with live rock. Then when you get your financial aide check for next fall (lol I'm in grad school working on double masters degrees) then get yourself a wave point t5 fixture for $300-400. Once you get
your light you can go into corals!

$1000 will have you in one helluva tank for coral building and growing.

One thing I'm doing right now is turning a used 10 gallon tank into 2 clown tank. $20 for the tank and light, $7 for a bag of dry argonite, (I had a 7lb chunk of live rock) $30-35 for live rock and presto you have a saltwater tank. It won't do corals though unless I upgraded the light.

$60 for all that.

Watch your local craigslist ads, you'll be amazed at what cheap tanks and stands you'll find!
