I am upgrading from 55 to 150 i was curious if i can keep my same 30 gallon sump. I was told the only reason to have a large sump was to add to volume of water. If i am already going to have 150 gallons why do i need to upgrade my sump? I do have a 55 i can convert into my sump but would like to avoid it if the 30 will work
Thanks

really depends on factors like what you want to accomplish with the sump and the bioload you want to keep, etc.... My first concern would be can the sump handle the extra water when the pump is off. You don't want it overflowing the sump and getting your floor all wet!!!

Good point! I was going to buy a float valve for that reason though. I want to keep a couple of tangs clowns and a couple of smaller fish mainly a reef tank though with a few fish thinking a naso, hippo, clown, 6 line wrasse, (2)gobies and a blenny.

I have a 35 sump on my 125 and I really wish I had a larger sump...I have had overflow before on the wood floor. Just my experience, but if you have the 55 then I would use it.

Even with the float valve?

Excuse me if I misunderstand, but when my tank overflowed it was due to a power outage and the water drained from the display back into the sump and overflowed because I didn't have enough "spare volume" in the sump to account for the drawdown. A float valve typically is for the ATO unless I am missing something.

If upgradinf from a 55 to a 150 then a skimmer upgrade would be in order as well. Make sure your sump can fit a skimmer that can handle your tank plus all other equiptment. A bigger sump would also allow for a fuge for nutrient export.
