Hey I am filling my new 36 Gal RSM today. Going to add approx 2-3" sand bed (seeded with some sand from stable tanks) and wanted to ask some newbie questions.

First what should the ideal salinity be for starting a cycle.

I am using approx 8 gal of Nutri water mixing the rest. (Reef Crystals)

Will go with 50lbs of cured Fiji LR ... LFS gives a nice discount at 50 lbs so any less is just not cost effective.

Any other tips or advice will post some pics when all is s/u. Thanks!

Are you going to keep a reef tank? If so the salinity should be around 1.025 if not then around 1.023. Also what kind of lighting are you using? I would use mh or t5s. If cycling do water changes every two weeks and check your water parameters after the first month. IMO

Used a mix of nutri water (sea water) and reef crystals mixed with ro. I need to get a new test kit a friends extra is not working I thunk the chems are too old.

get a refractometer while you are at it

refractometers are the choice of advanced hobbyists, primarily because they are more expensive
