a clean up crew of snails, crabs etc. Otherwise sounds like you might need more flow by adding some powerheads. For spot cleaning I use a turkey baster.

A gravel vacuum. Just vacuum into a bucket and do a water change

You obviously are overfeeding. Only put in a small amount at a time. You can always give them more, its a lot harder to take back.

I agree it sounds like you may be overfeeding a tad if there is lots of food left on the sand. Like the others mentioned I would vacuum it out if possible and cut back on the feedings. A small cleanup crew may be a benefit in helping clean up some excess food up in the future

What kind of snails and shrimp? Some snails only eat algae and could care less about left over fish food...

Unless you have a 2 gallon nano tank, that is no where near enough clean up crew... Think about some nassarius snails - good sand sifters and fun to watch...
