View Full Version : Part I arrived in Alaska

Part I arrived safe and sound. Everything looks great, I have life in my box o' water.

Skimmer is going crazy and I will post pics when the water clears more. My DH helped me put the sand in and he didn't get the concept of not stirring it around a lot, plus I moved rocks around this morning.

One of the sponges is fraying around the edges, should I trim that off? This is also the rock that my popping noise is coming from, so I don't want to remove it to get the critter out because there is a lot of sponge on it. Guess I'll be trying the trap.

You can always remove the rock and put it in a bucket w/an airstone. At least that way you can trap in the confines of the bucket or plastic tub/5gal tank, or whatever. Glad to hear everything made it.

Thanks, I'll try that.

That popping sound is going to either by a mantis or a pistol shrimp. If pistol shrimp, it is no big deal. If it is a mantis and you want to get him out, then I had best luck by actually accustoming it to getting fed (a small piece of shrimp on the end of a cheap wooden skewer). After it got used to coming out to get fed, I simply netted the two I had. I had no luck with trapping (but I did catch things I didn't want to, like hermit crabs and bristleworms).

Alaska...success.....

always make my heart skip a beat shipping there...

Let everything be for a few days......then start with the examination of organisms.....Delta came through again....how much was the shipping to Anchorage?

It was 212 lbs at 1.26 per pound, 267.12
Plus an unknown charge of 79.97

Total: 347.09

My husband picked it up for me so I didn't get a chance to ask about the 79.97. I am thinking it is a COD charge?

There are LOTS of crabs, finding out it is difficult to identify when they are so small.:p

Thanks again Richard for putting up me.:fun4: My husband said it was funny, as soon as he walked in the door at the cargo warehouse they were asking if he was the "fish guy". They were a little disappointed when he told them it was rocks.

Ahhh the unknown charge.....is called security fees and fuel surcharges.....not a COD charge........all the airlines have them...in varying degrees of cost.......Southwest just went up to .27 cents a pound fuel surcharge...on top of the regular freight charge.....has been this way since oil prices went crazy......call them up there on the slope and complain!

Here are a few more pics...the critters have gone into hiding for the most part. Removed a gorilla crab last night. I already had 50lbs of rock, so two of the rocks on the right side aren't TBS, the rest went in the sump.

This sponge isn't looking too good.

Won't be much else going on, waiting for the ammonia to spike. Hope the weather will be good for Richard when it is time for part II. (Can only hope)

Looking good......not sponge but tunicate......if you need to you can peel it back off the rock.....but usually does ok....would be the first thing I would remove if you get any ammonia issues...... .25 is pretty impressive!

keep me posted!
