I have had this fish in my tank for years and never been able to catch nor see him except for late night. he is not a bother but i would like to know what he is before i put him back into my main tank.

It's a Brotula belonging to the Genus of Dinematichthys.

Try Dinematichthys iluocoeteoides or Dinematichthys riukiuensis

i assume he is harmless to have in a reef tank as he has not cause me any problems that i know of.

ya he is cool. the pictures don't really do him Justis. the only problem is you never see him. i think he has come out where i have seen maybe three times in a year and only when all the lights are out. i bought him from the local fish store because he was cool looking.

You probably only see him at night because from what I read hes primarily a deep water fish
