I would hate to waste so much water and would like to fill up some drinking water jugs, but worried that waste water would be too dirty.

So...is RO/DI Waste Water drinkable?

Generally it will taste better than tap water. It's gone through the micron filter and carbon filter, so a LOT of chlorine has been removed, and other stuff.

Basically a Brita/PUR filter on steroids.

We drink our "waste water" since the TDS of the waste water is only around 140, which is pretty good.

Water tastes great.

I know I wouldn't....http://www.mysmiley.net/imgs/smile/sick/sick0006.gif (http://www.mysmiley.net/free-indifferent-smileys.php)

Ha! But you would drink it out of the faucet?

I read that waste water will have higher TDS than the source since its more concentrated, is there any truth to that?

Isnt the issue with drinking ro/di water actually how it is stored? Pure water can fowl easily, and that could lead to major illnesses. I know they sell specific drinking water containers for this purpose.

The tds shouldn't be effected since it doesn't pass through the ro membrane. w/o chlorine (removed by the carbon filter) I would think it would have a tendancy to foul quicker. In theory though it should be cleaner than tap water though.

I would not drink it. Put it in a bucket and water your plants with it.

The TDS will be about 20 % higher than the tap water TDS on a typical RO system. As mentioned above, it have been through a sediment filter and carbon block.

The the answer to your question really depends upon the tds of the tap water. EPA says anything over 500 ppm will be unpleasant to drink.

My tap water runs 1000-1500 tds. Try drinking that waste water when it is 20% higher. :)

I wouldn't drink that period. Ours around here is usually 160 - 250.

Do you have a softener? How long do your RO membranes last?

Isn't this what we are trying to avoid before adding to our fish tanks.

What I was referring to was the WASTE water from an RO system, not the purified water that comes out of an RO system (a.k.a. "permeate").

That is awesome. Does your water have the ability to flow?:sad2:

It's fine. Nothing harmful is added. Mine goes into the pond.

The RO taste worse. All the good stuff is taken out.

You drink tap water in California? It must be better than San Diego.

my water on a bad day is from 30ppm-230 after a rain give it 40 mins and it reads like a good day 8-20ppm before the ro/di after ofcourse is 0 but i still wouldnt drink my waste water. it waters my garden by it self. goes out the sump hole in my foundation and ends up in the garden. ro/di isnt bad though really brings out the flavor of the coffee try it but otherwise tastless water. prefer it b4 di as i know di water isnt good for you or the lack of nutrients arent good for you.
