Brisbane aquarium society collecting trips for January

Hi all,i have grabbed some pics from SEQASF threads on our club outings that we have had so far,three saltwater and two freshwater.

These are just a fraction of the info on our trips,but its enough to get the gist of one of our activities with in the club which is collectin trips/picnic trips.

There have been 5 trips i think so far this month gone.


A nice sized clown trigger,one of the 30 to 40 seen this past season.

A couple of the latz out of the ones gotten on one our recent trips,this were the smallest couple and was the only pair collected out of quite a few pairs in this particular spot.
One pair,both male and female were over 6 inchs each in size,they were huge,we never take them at or very near full size like that,plus they hadnt seen a net before and were suprisingly friendly and interested in what was going on,we couldnt even if we wanted take them.

A couple of Chaoti wrasse that were hanging around the wreck near the brocken up floor.
These are one the most harmless wrasse to put in a reef tank and they only grow to around 4inches,oh plus they are an Ausy indemic as well.

One the many caught of the old faithfull Leandrites cyrtorhynchus,no shrimp works harder in your aquarium at cleaning fish than these little beauties,they literaly swim into the open water and start working on the fish as they swim.

A nice Halichoeres Marginatus wrasse for dannys tank,a juvenile was caught for his tank as well.

Anything that starts with collecting is an actual trip that went ahead.

Liquidg, I have firm plans to travel to QL at the end of this year, I am thinking October. Is that a good time as far as weather and water conditions? We want to spend at least a full week diving. I might visit your local forum and get some more input and suggestions on locations and recommended charters.

If we aren't doing anything at the time a couple of private guys we know,you may be able to go out for a dive with them,if not we know a couple of commercial dive groups that will show you some excelent diving here in the south east.
One guy does straddie and frazer islands and takes out free diving spearoes but mainly scuba divers.
October is no worse than any other time,February to April is our normaly worst time to dive here.

Great, I appreciate that. I am in the beginning stages of the planning, thinking of flying into Sydney and out of Brisbane or vice versa, somehow including Cairns in the trip aswell.

Great to see you posting again lg, hopefully all is well. As always, love the pics of the huge latz and the little choati's. Unfortunately, the choati's don't seem to last very long (unless a huge pod population is available) since it's very difficult to get them changed over to frozen food.

Its sad that you say that because except for an occasional one jumping out their feeding is very easy.
We use cunjivoe in the mix always for angels and wrasse with the marinara mix.
Plus fresh crab meat when we make it up before freeziing with heaps of added salt and never had a prob with feeding,infact Danny our club pres that took one of them said it was pigging out on his similar mix the next day,its as fat as a fool now.

Plus by the time you get them over there they have most likely adrenalin damage,nitrate damage and so and so on.

Once the adrenalin has done its bit or a wholesalers high nitrate levels have damaged the organs as well there is no way,no matter what the fish eats that it can properly digest it after that.

We found out that so many fish that we used to think died of being drug caught actualy died of adrenalin organ damage or nitrate poisoning.

The daughter problem hasnt gone away its just a bit quieter now,though it looks like the month of May will be a bad month for us.

The south east here is amazing at times,yesterday we went to a reef virtually no one knows of in 45 feet of water and there were 50 to 60 latezonatus there at least,8 paits of size beyond book size,leopard sharks,manta rays,it was briliant,if ever you come over this way get in touch with the club as we know more than most about Queenslands south east of Aus.

Our flights are booked for Dec 1, 2010 to SYD :)
For now I am planning to fly into Cairns right after arrival on the 3rd and go on Spirit of Freedom on Monday, Dec 6 for 3 nights to Ribbon Reef and Cod Hole. The remainder of the trip is open. I am now contemplating whether we should do the Whitsundays for a couple of days or Lady Elliot/Lady Musgrave and then fly back from Brisbane to Sydney for the flight back to the US. The only thing we have to do is visit a few friends in Mackay, Yeppoon and Brisbane.

If by snorkel you mean swim from the beach, you will have a hard time finding anything in Cairns, unless you drive north. Cairns is in a big estuary (murky water) and all diving/snorkeling is made by boat ride to the GBR, which may take up to 2 hours.
