Think about this for a minute. Except for softies, most of the Corals out there, be it favia, goniastrea, blastomussa ..... consist of a very THIN layer of flesh (alive), and a big piece of skeleton that 95% of it is no longer used (just like a snail, coralites keep on building their skeleton and move to the upper layers.
So, the piece of Favia you just paid $80, in fact 1% of it is flesh, 5% is water it sucked from your tank, and the rest of it is dead skeleton.
The next time you see a big boulder coral, only the outer thin 'skin' is alive.
Kinda like our good ole' earth, a radius of 64000 km, and yet life exists only in a tiny fraction between the deepest of oceans and the atmosphere.
Just putting things in perspective.
