interesting question.

Chaetodontoplus ballinae is the most rare angel there is I believe, would love to see one in a tank or store some day, but I don't think they are in the hobby at present.

As to the Mola Mola, pretty sure you won't see one of those in a LFS anytime soon being they get 10 feet long.

I'm sorry I gotta say it. Why would a whale shark be available in the hobby? :lmao:

As far as rare fish go, my dream fish is Paracentropyge boylei, but that's not gonna happen.

No.
Don't know, but is a threatened species and hasn't been kept without its host, plus they are so small feeding is a problem.
Don't know, but is also a threatened species so I doubt it.
No.
Doubtful.
No.
No.
No.

Finding consistent suitable feeds for the juveniles of some of those you listed would be very hard. Anything planktonic is going to need constant supplies of food also to keep up with their metabolism, and a whale shark is going to eat a ton too.

I know you said no heckling, but I find this list rather comical, but if you ever run into one of those let us know how it goes.

As for the angels and butterfly the lord howe butterfly is protected because it lives in protected waters and same with the ballina angel. Personatus have been collected and oen was raised in captivity, but it went carpet surfing. All three of those would be good candidates for captivity though.

Chris didn't see your post until after I posted mine, hence the reason for editing, whoops.

WWCC,

Asking if a whale shark (Rhinocodon typus) is available "in the hobby" is ridiculous. You're obviously just trying to stir up stuff with such an absurd question.

I see that you even included a photo of that baby whale shark that was rescued in the Philippines on March 7, 2009 (http://www.wwf.org.ph/newsfacts.php?pg=det&id=144#). It had been illegally caught the day before and was tied up by its tail to a stake in the water while the criminals who caught it attempted to find a buyer. The baby whale shark was taken out to deeper waters and released.

For your information, all fishing, importing, exporting or possession of whale sharks is illegal in the Philippines and has been since 1998. There are a few captive whale sharks that are housed in multimillion-gallon tanks in public aquariums around the world but you certainly can't be serious when you ask if they're "available in the hobby."

Cut out the nonsense!
