Does it take a while for them to open? Or is it due to not liking the spot there at? Got them in sand with moderate water flow...suggestions?

I wouldn't worry too much, every now and then mine go a few days without opening up with no problems. I'd give them a few days and see if they open.
I've had mine laying on the sand (not buried in the sand..) or on rocks and they've opened up just fine in either place. I don't think they need all that much light, though they'll appreciate a shrimp or similar meal every now and then.
What kind of lights are over the tank? How far away are they?

150 watt mh with 4 26 watt T5s...the tanks 23" tall and lights are 7" away from tank......

Just picked up my first duncan frag this weekend. 3 heads on a disc, slow acclimation, and actinic lights only when I put them in the tank. I'd say within an hour they were mostly opened up and swaying around. It's been around 5 days now and they're doing great up on rock with moderate light and moderate flow. Maybe you can entice them on coming out with a little mysis or cyclops.

I feed mysis, but any meaty meal will work for them (diced shrimp, fish, etc).
Those look fine to me, though I've never buried mine in the sand like that. Give them a couple days. Your light should be fine for them.

Mine opened up within a few hours of the 10k bulbs turning on. I tried them in a different spot lsat night, and they didn't come out as much - there was too much flow. Maybe there is too much flow for them?

lights turn on at 12 so if they don't pop out by 3-4 ill put them in a area where theres barely any flow

I would slowly acclimate them to the light. They come from fairly murky waters. When I move them into areas of more flow they don't seem to do as well for a few days.

I think that everyones interpretation of low and moderate flow are a little different. Looks like in the picture that they may be in a little too high of flow possibly? Mine are in a flow that gently sways the polyps. It doesn't hurt to try moving them for a little bit to see, but it does take a couple hours after they are bumped or moved to open back up. Do you have any crabs or anything that may keep bumping into them?

Move it around a little and find it a happy place. Mine are up high under (3) 250 watt MH in med flow and love it. They grow like weeds mine started with 3 heads six months ago and now it has ten plus heads.

Mine didn't like high flow. It also loves mysis.
