i have had a 55g drum that i had bought from a feed store a while back ago. i was wondering if it would be good to use to transport water in. i think that the drums were used for holding jalapeno peppers. i was going to rinse it and scrub it out really good, do you think it will contaminate the water with anything bad??? thanks for the help!

first off, how do you plan to transport it? 55 gallons of saltwater will weigh over 500 pounds.

roll it?
If the drum was used for food storage, then you could wash it with a vinegar solution and it should be fine. I doubt there would have been any harmful chemicals used.

Most likely if it had food shipped in it th eplastic " should" be food grade and a good rinse with vinegar like the others said will clean it up some. I use the 55g drums soft drink syrup comes in all the time and a quick rinse and they are good to go

my 55g barrel was used to store photographic developer - After a through cleaning, I put it into service. 20+ years later and have not had a problem with it yet

I bring em home from work all the time (soda concentrate) I rinse em and give a good soak with a box of baking soda.
