Hi everyone,
I don't get on here too much as I'm based in the UK but have been doing a lot of reading as there's a lot of different and useful information on this forum.
I have a big PO4 problem in my tank. It's not causing algae issues but I have a high reading (0.14 with D&D kit). I want to set my tank up for SPS corals and have everything set to do so, I just need to get my PO4 down.
I'm running ZEOvit which doesn't seem to be touching the PO4 and as I understand it, I'm not to run a PO4 reactor with ZEO.
My corals are all looking healthy at the moment but I've tried SPS frags and they don't survive (not surprising). I seem to be fighting a losing battle by throwing money into lots of water changes to try and remove my PO4 but it's just not happening. I did a test to see if my LR was holding PO4 by leaving a piece of rock in some fresh saltwater mix overnight and then testing in the morning and sure enough, PO4 had leached out.
Now I've been reading up on cooking my LR and this looks like a good way to go for me but I need to confirm if I cook it for a few months, will it remove the locked in Phosphates? This will also allow me to re-scape my tank for an all-around better flow through the rocks and less coverage on the sand bed.
Some of my rocks have a lot of mushrooms attached to them. Obviously if I cook these rocks, the mushrooms will die off but I want to cook the rock that their on. What can I do about this? It won't be a huge loss if the mushrooms die off but if I allow this to happen, would it cause ammonia spikes while cooking? Or will it not matter if I allow them to die off?
Thanks in advance.
